Abstract:
Alfred Galpin (1903-1983) was a correspondent of Howard P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), from as early as 1918 to 1936. The two became fast friends and Lovecraft thought of Galpin as his adopted grandson. This collection includes letters to and from individuals interested in Galpin’s connection with Lovecraft; a pamphlet in Italian from an international Lovecraft conference in Trieste (1977); photographs and newspaper clippings in Italian, French and English; and photocopies of Lovecraft and Galpin articles in amateur journalism publications The Rainbow and The United Amateur.

The John Hay papers consists of Hay's correspondence with his family and with literary, diplomatic, and political contemporaries; diaries kept by Hay as Lincoln's White House aide and as Secretary of the Legations in Paris, Vienna, and Madrid, 1866-1870; manuscript poems; galley proofs; personal letterpress copy books; photographs of Hay, his family, and various political figures; political cartoons; sound recordings; and a small collection of objects. The David H. Hirsch papers (1826-2000; bulk, 1961-1999) include correspondence, essays, manuscripts, translated materials, research and lecture notes, course syllabi, annotated critical material, financial documents, conference proceedings, committee agendas, notebooks, and photographs. These materials relate primarily to his tenure as Professor of English at Brown University. Most of the collection reflects his extensive research and writing in American literature and literary theory, as well as in Holocaust literature and interpretation. Includes correspondence, manuscripts, play scripts, film scripts, photographs, drawings, galley proofs, and ephemera of the American poet, experimental filmmaker, editor, and educator Willard Maas, dating from 1931 to 1968. Maas, who was openly bisexual and married to artist and filmmaker Marie Menken, with whom he often collaborated, is especially known for his pioneering avant-garde films, many of which explored homoerotic themes. These films, which were created from the early 1940s to the late 1960s, influenced the work of a number artists from that era, including Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol; and they continue to garner much critical attention and acclaim by many contemporay scholars, filmmakers, and artists who acknowlege Maas' influential contribution to the history of cinematography.
